in the works to stop these cuts from happening on friday. in fact, president obama is hitting the road today going to virginia to talk more about the impact of these cuts. republicans have been criticizing him saying he's campaigning instead of staying here trying to work things out. two sides are really far apart. there seems to be no good starting point especially at this late date and we are now getting a better sense of where the first cuts could hit. a lot of those who may be laid off or even furloughed may not see impact until early april. there are other things that could happen sooner like federal heating assistance in the midst of severe weather we've been having. food for new mothers may be scaled back a bit. construction money for school construction and even federally funded unemployment checks for those unemployed long te-term looking at a 10% cut in unemployment checks. we're starting to get a sense of how communities around the country are preparing for this. >> tracie potts from washington, d.c., thank you for that update. >>> janet napolitano will talk about how the departme
